Sentence 2: "Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure."
Comments: The direct object of the present participle testing is the noun clause introduced by the expletive whether and extending to the end of the sentence. Conceived and dedicated are past participles.
